| Daily Devotional for July 8, 2024 Shannon’s caregiver was at a family reunion for the 4th of July weekend, which meant I had to have help this past Sunday. Luckily, four of Shannon’s friends have volunteered to be available whenever needed. I kind of think of them as the four horsemen of the apocalypse, only scarier. It is very clear when one of them is there to help Shannon, my job is to get out of the way so they can do their job. Shannon is in very good hands. Yesterday, Carol arrived at 7:15 to get Shannon ready for church. Knowing Carol would be able to handle whatever happened, I left for the early service. This got me thinking. For most of my life, I have taken pride in being a self-sufficient person that really didn’t need help from anyone else. Whatever happened, I could handle it. Shannon’s injury has helped me see I was delusional. There is no way Shannon and I could have survived without family and friends volunteering to help us in the midst of our crisis. This has convinced me that John Donne’s line, “No man is an island,” is absolutely true. All of us are dependent upon others. Most importantly, God is the One who orchestrates all areas of our lives to bring others to help in our most critical moments. That’s what God does. He is very good. This is what the psalmist meant by saying, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) I hope you are at a good place in life but if you are in the midst of hard times and need help, the first thing to do is ask God. He will not let you down. I promise. Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, thank you for those you have sent to help me. Please use me to lighten the heavy load someone else is carrying. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen. Today is a new day. Find a way to help someone. You will be glad you did, and you will make God smile. There is no higher purpose. Also, just for the record, during the time in life when I thought I was completely self-reliant, there was one exception. Because of my unique ability to break any piece of farm equipment, I had Dee on speed dial. At first, I was offended when he would answer the phone by saying, “What did you break this time?” After a while, I got used to it. You don’t have to walk through life alone. God is here. He will send people to help you. I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter. Tom Robbins |
