Mike sent me the following story. It has a wonderful lesson.
A kangaroo kept getting out of his enclosure at the zoo. Knowing that he could hop high, the zoo officials put up a ten-foot fence. He was out the next morning, just sauntering around the zoo. A twenty-foot fence was put up. Again he got out.
When the fence was forty feet high, a camel in the next enclosure asked the kangaroo, “How high do you think they’ll go?”
The kangaroo said, “About a thousand feet, unless somebody locks the gate at night!”
The lesson is very simple – lock the gate.
The greatest lessons in life are usually that simple. Most of them have to do with locking the gate.
A good example is what we do with words.
Solomon said, “Those who guard their mouths preserve their lives; those who open their lips come to ruin.” (Proverbs 13:3)
Today you will encounter many people. Be careful with your choice of words. Don’t say something you will later regret. Words matter.
As the kangaroo would say, “Lock the gate.”
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, give me words of love, joy, and peace. Remove from my mouth the words that cause pain and grief. Let your words me mine. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
There are many times when I have regretted the words I spoke in anger or haste. If only I had locked the gate.
