Rerun of Daily Devotional May 22, 2017
Yesterday I met with Andrew and Celeste for their pre-marital counseling. It was a very good session where we talked about what it means to be a man and woman that stand before God and promise to love each other when it is easy and when it is not, to always be there for each other, and understanding that they are equal partners in this wonderful experience of becoming a new family.
Some people don’t see it that way. Mike sent me the following joke that highlights how some see marriage.
“A grandmother overheard 5-year-old Christy “playing wedding.” The wedding vows went like this: ‘You have the right to remain silent, anything you say may be held against you, you have the right to have an attorney present. You may kiss the bride.’”
This reminds me of the phrase, “The old ball and chain.”
I am convinced that the key to a happy marriage happens only when the couple intentionally place God at the very center of their relationship. Then, even though there will be strains, the marriage will remain on solid ground. It will not only survive, it will thrive.
But that’s just not the key to a happy marriage. It is the key to a happy life. And much like marriage, life has good moments and then it has those times that are incredibly hard.
Jesus gave us the answer by telling the story of a house build on rock and a house built on sand. When the storms of life came, the house built on sand collapsed because it did not have a solid foundation. But Jesus said, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on the house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock.” (Matthew 7:24-25)
Your foundation to a life of clarity, purpose, and joy revolves around placing Jesus at the very center of your existence.
As you begin a new work, with the many strains and distractions that are coming your way, be intentional about keeping Jesus as your only foundation.
This won’t insulate or isolate you from the coming challenges, but it will allow you to weather the storm and live the life that God has chosen for you.
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, there are times when I am easily distracted and led astray. In every aspect of life, help me to rely on your guidance, love, and grace. Bless my day, my words, my thoughts, and my actions. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
The key to a happy marriage and a happy life is putting Jesus at the very center.
