Daily Devotional for January 12, 2023

Yesterday, I was visiting with a friend who is at a turning point in his life.  Important decisions need to be made.

As we talked, he said, “I don’t hear God.”  But the more we talked, the clearer it became God had been speaking all along, he just didn’t recognize God’s voice.

This got me thinking.

Most of us won’t get the privilege of talking to a burning bush on the side of a mountain, come face to face with an angel, or hear God’s booming voice.  That doesn’t mean God’s not speaking.

I have had God speak to me through scripture, prayer, people, music, literature, the laughter of children, a beautiful sunset, light streaming through stained-glass windows, watching a calf being born, the commitment of a wife, the loving embrace of a parent, seeing a field of bluebonnets, watching waves crash on a beach, seeing a mare nurse a colt, the ways God speaks goes on and on….

Sometimes we need help recognizing God’s voice.

When Samuel was a little boy, God spoke.  The Bible says, “( Now Samuel didn’t yet know the Lord, and the Lord’s word hadn’t yet been revealed to him.)” (1 Samuel 3:7)

Samuel didn’t recognize it was God until Elli told him to say, “Speak, Lord. Your servant is listening.”  (1 Samuel 3:9) Only then did God’s voice and message become crystal clear.

If you are struggling to hear God speak, don’t be disheartened.

If you are very attentive, you will hear God’s small still voice in a myriad of ways.  He loves you too much to remain silent.  God will speak.

Prayer:  Dear Gracious Heavenly God, help me be aware of your presence.  Open my mind, eyes, ears, and heart to hear your message for me.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.

Today, God has a message for you.  Also, God wants to use you to convey his message to others.  Let him.

I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
