Daily Devotional for January 5, 2023

Monday morning, as I was shaving, I looked in the mirror and noticed a small red spot above my left eye.  I didn’t think much of it, but I asked Shannon to look.  She wanted me to go to the doctor.  I said no.

Tuesday morning, as I was shaving, I looked the mirror and noticed the small red dot was much bigger.  Now it looked like I had the beginnings of a black eye.

Wednesday morning, as I was shaving, I looked in the mirror and saw I had a real shiner.  So, I accused Shannon of hitting me while I was asleep.  She said she had thought about it more than once, but it wasn’t her.  This got me thinking.

On Sunday afternoon, I had used an impact wrench to pull wheels off a truck and had used the tractor to move large round bales of hay.  I wasn’t wearing eye protection, but I didn’t remember anything hitting my eye.

The bottom line is I may never know why a black eye happened on my perfect face.  There are a lot of things I don’t know.

Why in the land of plenty do we have people who are hungry?  Why is there child and spouse abuse?  Why are two countries on the other side of the planet locked in a battle to the death?  Why can’t our congress get anything done?  Why do some people pretend to like kale?

Like I said, there’s a lot of things I don’t know.

But while I don’t have all the answers, I have the answer that transcends all the questions.

The answer to life is to give yourself to Jesus and follow God’s plan for your life.  And while this won’t answer every question, it will make the unanswered questions less of an issue.

Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  (Luke 12:34)

If your heart is right with God, you can be comfortable not knowing all the answers because you know The Answer.

Prayer:  Dear Gracious Heavenly God, fill my spirit with your love, grace, and peace.  Use me to bring others out of the darkness into your light and peace.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.

While I am satisfied with not knowing everything, I still wonder where my black eye came from.

Now that I’ve thought about it a few minutes, I do think Shannon is hitting me in my sleep.
