Rerun of Daily Devotional September 12, 2016

Benny is a football coach for Troy ISD.  This past week, his son got hurt in his first football game.  As they were waiting to see the doctor, Benny had too much time on his hands.  This is what his wife sent me.

“This is from my husband the coach!  He said watch out!  From Benny.  He is currently terribly bored as we are waiting to see the foot doctor for Jace who got hurt playing his very first football game last night.  We are praying that it is just a sprained ankle.”

“You should be as excited about church as about the Super Bowl.  So, when your pastor makes a point this Sunday, pour Gatorade over his head.”

The good news is that Jace will be back on the field in a few weeks.  The bad news is that no one poured Gatorade on my head this past Sunday.

The fascinating thing is that even though I preach to hundreds of people every Sunday, who do not pour Gatorade on my head, you can impact a much bigger audience.

As you begin a new workweek, remember that you will encounter people who know very little about our faith.  They are curious but many don’t even know how to begin the conversation.

By the way you speak and conduct yourself; you can help others come into God’s light.

A friend once said, “You may be the only bible someone ever reads.”  I think there’s a lot of truth in that.

This is what Jesus meant when he said, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:16)

In living a life that shows God’s love to the world, you probably won’t get Gatorade poured on your head, but you will make God smile.  That’s what really matters.

Prayer:  Dear Gracious Heavenly God, as I begin a new workweek and must meet all the demands upon my time and energy, help me to stay focused on you.  Help me to put you at the very center of my existence.  Give me the strength, courage, faith, and joy to be the person you created me to be.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.

If Benny wants to pour Gatorade on my head when I am preaching, I cannot wait to see what he does when Jace scores his first touchdown.  It should be quite a show.

I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
