This past weekend, Ellie and Drew were out of town celebrating their fortieth wedding anniversary.
Tuesday morning, I asked Ellie if they had a good weekend. She said they did, and I said, “You saved your marriage for another week.” Ellie said, “Drew saved his marriage for another week.”
This got me thinking.
A marriage is a blessing but there are times when it is hard work. The only people who say marriage is always fun and easy are those that have never been married.
It’s kind of like the only true experts on raising children are those who never had any. For the rest of us, we were just trying to keep them alive until they were old enough to leave home.
What makes a marriage work?
Is it the initial physical attraction? Is it a commitment to shared goals? Is it the desire to provide a stable home for children? Is it wealth? Is it a common interest?
Sadly, the divorce rate for 2021 in the United States was approximately 45%. Why is this happening?
While the reasons couples divorce go on forever, the reason followers of Christ stay together is because they both have made a commitment to maintain the vows taken at their wedding. The reason a marriage ends in a Christian home is because either one or both parties has discarded their sacred promise.
A broken promise leads to pain, suffering, and hurt.
The good news is there is one promise that will never be broken. The One who loves you more than life itself said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Hebrews 13:5)
In a world where even the most sacred relationships can end in ruins, there is One who is always faithful. You are never alone.
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, at times, my life seems to be filled with chaos. You are my stability and my rock. I will build my life upon your love. I know you will always be here. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
There is nothing you can do that will make God love you more. There is nothing you can do that will make God love you less. God loves you.
Also, now that I’ve had a few minutes to think about my marriage, I am certain Shannon stays with me because I am so good looking.
I think I’ll ask her.
I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
