Daily Devotional November 1, 2021

A few weeks ago, the children in our church gave me a large poster they made in Children’s Church that said, “Happy Pastor’s Appreciation Day, To the Best Pastor Ever….HANDS DOWN!”

To emphasize the HANDS DOWN, all the children had dipped their hands in different colored paints and covered the poster with their little handprints.  At the bottom of the poster was a big red heart.  It melted mine.

Last week, I asked Sam to hang the poster in the hallway of Dennis Hall where I would get to see it every day.  I should have thought that through.

Later, when I walked into the hallway, I saw Sam had hung the poster on the wall a few inches from the ceiling.  Did I mention that Sam’s pretty tall?

When I commented on how the poster was hung perfectly for a giraffe, Melissa said all the pictures in her house were just as high.  Did I mention Scott’s pretty tall?

Seeing this as a teachable moment, I explained to Sam items hung on the walls were supposed to be at eye level and the poster was too tall for me to truly admire.  He told me he understood.

Later, when I walked into the hallway, I saw that Sam had hung the poster on the wall a few inches from the floor.  That’s right.  A million comics out of work and Sam has decided to be one.

While this was incredibly funny, what I found even more remarkable is that Sam is an engineering major.

As a rule, engineers are not allowed to have a sense of humor.  I think it’s because they have too many numbers stuck in their heads.  In fact, David is the only other engineer I know with a sense of humor.  The rest of them never get my jokes or stories.  Kind of makes me sad.

I hope someone hangs your poster a few inches off the floor or does something else that makes you laugh and truly enjoy this day.

We celebrate because we have a wonderful God.

King David said, This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)

I hope you do!

Prayer:  Dear Gracious Heavenly God, in the midst of the rush of this day, remind me of your goodness and joy.  Please allow me to lighten someone’s heavy load.  In Jesus’ name I pray.  Amen.

While I truly hope someone brings laughter into your life today, don’t expect it to be an engineer.  There are  only two with a sense of humor and they are both in our church.

Just for the record, I am going to leave the poster in Dennis Hall hanging at mouse height for a few more days.

Also, the book of Daily Devotionals was delivered to the church last week.  It is brilliant.

If you want one, please either send an email or call the church office at (254)773-5269.  All proceeds will go to the Youth and Children’s Departments.

I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
