Rerun of Daily Devotional September 9, 2017
Yesterday morning I walked into my office to find a package that Cheryle had dropped off. I was pretty pumped because it looked like a package of food. But then when I got a closer look, I realized it wasn’t food, it was smoky bacon flavored kale. And not just any kale, it was Lacinato Kale. I’ve never even heard of Lacinato Kale. To add insult to injury, it was non-GMO, gluten-free, USDA Organic, and vegan.
My first question was, “Who eats this kind of stuff?” My second question was, “How is it vegan if it’s bacon flavored?” My third question had to do with whether or not Cheryle really was a Christian?
I’ve always assumed Cheryle was a Christian. She comes to worship. She helps others in need. She has always seemed very devout, but the kale put all of that into question. What does it take to be a Christian?
Jesus said, “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.” (John 3:16-18)
So if what Jesus says is true, then the requirement to be a Christian is to truly believe that he came, died, and rose again so that each of us can live with God for eternity. And if this is not the core belief of our lives, then we are something other than Christian.
Choose to truly believe that through Jesus Christ you are made clean, whole, and complete. It is the best way to live life and this belief is the only way to eternal life.
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, thank you for sending your Son into this world and into my life. Help me to believe when my faith is weak. Help me to live a life that pleases you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
So as strange as this sounds, even though Cheryle gave me the single grossest thing in all God’s creation, she is still a Christian because she truly believes Jesus is her Savior. Having said that, I am still going to be praying for her. It is obvious she really needs it.
I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
