Yesterday, Shannon and I celebrated our twentieth wedding anniversary. She is one blessed woman.
When I told her how fortunate she was to have spent twenty years married to such a good looking, articulate, intelligent, and successful man, she started to laugh.
Have you ever heard someone laugh too loud, too long, and too hard? She kind of hurt my feelings.
If you are like me and have an overinflated sense of who you are, listen up. None of us is a cool, good looking, intelligent, important, or religious as we think we are. And when we get in real trouble is the moment we begin to think we are somebody.
After being warned in a dream not to think more highly of himself than he should, King Nebuchadnezzar stood on the roof of his palace, looked out over his kingdom and said, “I am the MAN.” He paid a huge price for his arrogance. (Daniel 4:28-33)
In Paul’s letter to the church at Rome, he helps us understand who we really are: “For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you.” (Romans 12:3)
What makes us special has nothing to do with any attributes we possess. It has to do with the fact that God loves us so much, he would rather die than live without us, and that’s exactly what he did.
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, fill my heart with humility and a willingness to serve wherever you call. Forgive any arrogance in me and guide my steps. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
In taking another look at our marriage, I have to confess, that even though Shannon is married to the perfect male, I am the one that is truly blessed because she is willing to love me enough to put up with me. This proves God is very good.
I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
