Yesterday, the first thing I did when I got to church was make a pot of coffee. It has to be me because everyone else who tries to make the coffee messes it up. In fact, the last time Brian made the coffee I actually chipped a tooth. Also, it’s about the only thing I am qualified to do.

While the coffee was brewing, I went to my office to start the morning’s work.

A half hour later, I decided it was time to come up for air, so I made my way to the break room to get a cup of coffee. That’s when I knew I had made a tragic mistake because the room was completely filled with women.

Kay was meeting with the Women’s Council and I always make it a point to stay far away from rooms filled with women because I am afraid of them.

But the need for caffeine won and before the meeting began, I quickly walked to the coffee maker and explained that, while I would never willingly walk into a room filled with women, I didn’t have a choice because I needed coffee.

As all these women laughed at their terrified pastor, Jane said, “You got a haircut. It looks good.” I responded, “I didn’t get a haircut. I just washed it.” Then Janet said, “That sounds like something a woman would say.” I quickly grabbed my cup of coffee and got out of Woman’s Land as fast as possible.

While you may never have to deal with an entire room filled with scary women, sooner or later you will encounter a challenging situation. When it happens, the best advice is to say as little as possible and get out of the line of fire.

The wisest of all people said, “Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” (Proverbs 21:23) In other words, don’t let your big mouth overload your tiny hiney. You will save yourself a lot of trouble.

Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, give me the wisdom to refrain from saying everything that comes to my mind. Please make my words loving, graceful, and compassionate. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Now that I’ve had a little time to process the haircut comment, I have to admit, I do look good. I always do. But if I said anything more about my incredibly good looks, I would be ignoring my own advice about the less said, the better. Some things are so obvious, they don’t have to be said.

I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
