Some people believe Christians are uncompassionate, xenophobic, intolerant, women suppressing, gay hating, white supremist loving, Darwin doubting, science disputing, flat earth subscribing, hypocritical, grace withholding, boring, uptight, miserly, and joyless people. None of that is true.
Sadly, we have allowed the lunatic fringe of the faith to define who we are to a world that does not know us. This must change.
As the world continues to struggle with addiction, hatred, bigotry, poverty, illiteracy, hunger, spouse/child abuse, physical violence, greed, narcissism, and hopelessness, those who follow Jesus Christ must let those who are lost understand that there is a way of joy, hope, peace, and purpose. We do this by shining the light of love into the darkness of despair.
Another way to think about this is that Christians are much like a lighthouse shining a bright light into the darkness of the sea of desperation. Our purpose is to guide people to the only safe harbor.
Jesus said, “You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16 CEB)
Today you will have the opportunity to shine your light for someone who needs to know the truth. Don’t be bashful, shy, or hesitant. Let God’s love shine through you.
Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, today I give myself to you and your purpose without fear or reservation. Use my meager talents to help others feel your love, grace, and peace. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
The reason we are still in this world is that God wants to use us to help others see the truth about what it means to follow Jesus. It’s up to us. I pray we don’t let God down.
I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
