Throughout thirty years as a pastor, I have hired many people to work for the church. Sometimes it looks like I don’t know which end is up when they don’t work out for a host of reasons. But even a blind squirrel gets a nut every once in a while. Janet is my nut.

I hired her to be the church cook and she has made me look like the genius I actually am. In fact, last year at the Wednesday night meal, as I was standing in line, loading up on meatloaf, Bob and Lauren were right behind me. Bob said, “This is the best home cooked meal I get all week.”

Realizing Lauren heard Bob’s comment, I knew I was about to do emergency couple’s counseling then she looked at me and said, “It is.” That’s when I knew their marriage was going to make it.

Today is our church’s first day of Wednesday activities for the new school year. I am very excited about this because, while I like summer (except August – everyone hates August – even God,) I am always glad to get back into the regular routines and rhythms of the church.

What I especially enjoy about Wednesdays is that combines my two favorite things: God and gluttony.

For our church, Wednesday is a day of worship, fellowship, food, service, and Bible study. It is about setting aside time during the hectic chaos of the week to recharge and focus on what really matters.

If you have not participated in Wednesday activities, I hope to see you today. Once you come, you will be hooked. Even more important, when you are part of a group that celebrates what it is to know true love, joy, and forgiveness, God is right there.

That’s what Jesus meant by saying, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)

Come be a part of something wonderful. You will be glad you did.

Prayer: Dear Gracious Heavenly God, in the midst of the mad rush of the week, help me to set aside time to be with you and be in fellowship with other believers. Guide my thoughts, words, and actions. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Just for the record, Janet is serving meatloaf tonight. I am pumped. I know Bob and Lauren are too.

I pray your day is filled with joy and laughter.
